Characteristics of Laguna
Opened in 1990 and designed by U.S. golf architect Joseph Lee, the Laguna Golf Course makes full use of the wet, marshy ground near the sea. Many previous visitors will recognise it as part of the former 27-hole Vilamoura III course. It has been subject to continual improvements over the years.
at the Oceanico Laguna Golf Course, Vilamoura, the golfer can drive off more confidently, because of its width open fairways with very few trees, at the exception of the 11th and 12th that take the player around and over a lake. 79 strategically placed bunkers are the main difficulty and water hazards is a nearly permanent obstacle.
These factors combined with the occasional strong wind make for an interesting round at Laguna Golf Course.
Challenging but still enjoyable
Lee may have designed a golf course that is visually intimidating, but as Laguna is not very long, the golfer may complete it without great difficulty. The result is that the satisfaction for the golfer, after finishing his game, is even greater.
What will be your strategy?
The Laguna Golf Vilamoura is a course that can be likened to some degree to the challenges that are provided by a Links course. There are several ways to play the Laguna golf course, as one soon discovers at hole number 5 (see head picture above) which is 315 metres for a Par 4, with a lake covering the right-handed dogleg. Here the player's options for the first shot range from a driver to a number five iron.
The player must reflect that by choosing a wood the second shot will be significantly shorter. But this also brings the water into play, so highly increasing the risks.
In Vilamoura, nature is preserved
In addition to acting as hazards and emergency water reservoirs, the lakes serve a useful purpose in attracting a variety of aquatic birds, both resident and migratory, as well as amphibians, otters, terrapins etc. And there is an environmental nature park close to Oceanico Laguna Golf Course.
